INSTITUTIONAL PROFILE
(2024)
- INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background information.
1.1.1 Angel House Children’s Home (AHCH) is a Non-Governmental and non-lucrative Charitable Organization based in Tarime District, Tanzania. Its formation arose after a meeting between its early founders Mr. Christopher Ryoba Kangoye, at that time a Tanzania Revenue Authority employee, and Mr. Fredrick E. Allen a Missionary from Ohio, United States of America. The duo met in Dar-es-Salaam in 2003. Fred proposed to open a lucrative business in Dar es Salaam and in response; Christopher proposed to open an orphanage and displaced children’s home at Tarime. At the instance of Christopher and Fred a visit to Tarime was made and in the result, a common stand was concluded to open and register a local a charitable organization.
Christopher was assigned to work on land and registration of a local charitable organization. On the other hand Fred was assigned to mobilize foreign funding. This led to identification of forty acres of land, some seven kilometers from Tarime Township, within the vicinity of Mori River which was donated to our organization by the Gamasara village community to construct a children’s home. Fred in partnership with United Methodist Church of America and other friends managed to mobilize the first funding to support the idea.
1.1.2 Their efforts succeeded in the same year 2003 after registration of Methodist Angel House Orphanage Home Tanzania Trust; and recruiting the first group of 28 children at rented premises at Ronsoti Street in Tarime town. After nine years of operation it was agreed that since our partners in USA managed to register an organization under the name “Grassroots From The People, For The People, Inc.”, it could work well in Tanzania after being registered as International NGO. It was decided to deregister the Trust instead and, register an International NGO. Grass Roots From The People For The People Inc. was registered in Tanzania under the Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO) Act No 24 of 2002 as International NGO with registration number 00NGO/00005473 of 17th April 2012. The headquarter of this International NGO is in Ohio, USA where it was registered as an NGO with Certificate number V201246F68CA 8 of 17th Feb 2012.
1.1.3. After registering a number of success stories and in order to solve some operational challenges such as difficult of an International NGO to own land in Tanzania, deliberate efforts were made to re-register the institution into local NGO in Tanzania culminating into its late registration of Angel House Children/s Home (AHCH) on 10th August 2021 with a registration number 00NGO/R/2108.

3.9. Initiatives to Curb Poverty and Unemployment Problems
The said income generation activities have created permanent employment for supervisors; and seasonal and casual employment opportunities where there is need to regulate labour deployment with levels of activities. AHCH has established demonstration farms and undertake to share with the surrounding communities on smart agriculture and income generation practices to enhance productivity in a sustainable manner. Using modern farming technologies AHCH managed raise maize farm productivity from 0.6MT/acre to 4MT/acre.
Improvement to productivity in agriculture related activities is envisaged to go in tandem with vocational training and entrepreneurship development. It is in this sense of thinking that AHCH constructs a Vocational and Entrepreneurship Centre to serve both the Home and the community. AHCH shall endeavour to add value to agriculture produce that include beekeeping products using simple, affordable and easy to apply technologies. This is envisaged to be an initial step to get fit local community-based children and adults to undertake projects that will enable attainment of the AHCH objective of advocating “economic development activities to the community”
3.10. Initiatives to Address Insufficiency of Health Services
AHCH runs an infirmary on its premises to serve its community. There are also made available first aid kits at various points. AHCH intends to construct more health facilities within the community to provide services at affordable rates. The thrust will be on Dental Care, Mother and Child Care; and also clinics for non-communicable diseases. AHCH shall further implement disease prevention programs such as WASH which is explained here under.
3.11. Promotion of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)
AHCH implements the “National Guidelines for Water, Sanitation and Hygiene for Tanzania Schools-2016” to ensure availability of sanitation facilities for the schools, based on standards for kindergarten, pre-primary, primary and Secondary Schools. It further endeavours to provide sanitation and hygiene education across the AHCH community. It is planned that AHCH promotes WASH practices to other schools and elsewhere within the surrounding communities by implementing sensitization and outreach programs. By so doing, AHCH shall engage communities for behavioral and cultural changes.
3.12. Environmental Protection, Climate Change and Adaptation
AHCH has made some initiatives to start involving in Environmental and Climate Related activities. The initiatives were based on the “Mara River Wetlands Integrated Management Plan (IMP) 2018-2022 compiled by the Mara Regional Administration” The plan was deemed imperative to attempt to mitigate the challenges the Wetlands face that include proliferation of plans to develop dams in the basin, planned intra-basin water transfers in the upper catchments, unsustainable land use and management (overstocking, overgrazing, deforestation, pollution) coupled with climate change that will continue to present a major drawback for communities living within the Mara River Basin. The plan provides a roadmap for all stakeholders, including communities, technical experts, Non-Governmental Organizations and Governmental players on how to work together to resolve the challenges.
AHCH has so far prepared and submitted a Concept Note to cooperate with the Mara Region Administration to:
- Identify and suggest agricultural activities amongst the available options (crops, livestock, fishing, and others) and suitability for the available land and eco-system;
- Invest in and promote “Climate Smart Agriculture”; undertaking a series of awareness creation activities to promote Climate- Smart Agriculture Practices and Technologies;
- Compile and facilitate implementation of specific Climate-Smart Agricultural Projects enhancing organic farming, fishing, livestock and enabling tree plantation and natural tree regeneration to substantial climate change mitigation.
- Create employment out of environmental and climate change related activities by investing in value addition, organising a contract out-growers scheme to enable farmers benefit from a guaranteed market and technical support (financing, farm inputs and agronomists’ and other experts’ services)
In another development, AHCH prepared a plan to participate in conservation of Utimbaru Mountain Escapement by Reforestation through Natural Regeneration. This is based on the fact that non-smart agricultural practices on the escapements lead to land cover change, increased soil erosion and sedimentation within the catchments. Rapid regrowth and the density of the papyrus swamp promotes practices of making fire to burn them to clear access for fishing, or/and promote other activities such as entrapment. Due to Climate Change, increased and intense rainfall and evapotranspiration cause frequent floods and siltation. There is increased pressure from human populations, settlements and activities such as overgrazing, unsustainable agriculture, overfishing, increased demand on water resources, deforestation and overharvesting of wetland products. Deforestation has affected the Utimbaru escapements a great deal.
In light of the foregoing, AHCH envisage to participate in environmental and climate related activities such as Agroforestry; forests conservation and/or reforestation where appropriate; renewable energy; economic use of energy; value addition to non-wood forest products; smart agriculture, fishing and other livelihood practices; and Income generation, improvement of livelihood and poverty alleviation out of environmental and climate change related activities.
